How to set up a YubiKey with a Dropbox account?
With hardware security keys, you can get the additional protection of two-factor authentication to make your login procedure secure. Follow these step-by-step instructions to easily set up a U2F security key to work with your Dropbox accounts.
By the end of this tutorial, you will have enabled strong two-factor authentication, using a YubiKey with your Dropbox account.
Requirements
- A computer with a USB port and the latest version of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or Microsoft Edge.*
- U2F-enabled security key: Security Key, Security Key NFC, YubiKey 5 NFC, YubiKey 5C, YubiKey 5/5C Nano, YubiKey FIPS,
YubiKey Nano FIPS, YubiKey C FIPS, YubiKey C Nano FIPS - Google account (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google+, etc.).
- Mobile phone to receive SMS with one-time passwords (or with Google Authenticator installed to receive one-time passwords through the application). Needed for the initial setup and backup.
- A Dropbox account.
If your Dropbox account doesn’t already have two-step verification turned on, follow these steps to turn it on. If two-step verification is already enabled, continue with Step 2.
Step 1: Enabling two-step verification
- Sign in to your Dropbox account.
- Click your profile picture in the top right of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- Select the Security tab.
- Switch Two-step-verification to On.
- Click Get started.
- Enter your password.
- Select the method for obtaining one-time passwords via text messages or program for mobile devices.
Step 2: Adding a YubiKey for two-step verification
- Sign in to your Dropbox account.
- Click your profile picture in the top right of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- Select the Security tab.
- In the Two-Step Verification section, to the right of Security Keys, click Add. If this section is not displayed, follow the steps in Step 1, to enable two-step verification.
- Enter your password.
- Insert your YubiKey into a USB port, then click Begin setup.
- Click Key inserted.
- Wait your YubiKey to begin flashing, then tap the gold button or edge.
Congratulations! You have now added a Security Key by Yubico to your Dropbox account. Now it will be easy for you to log in to Dropbox with strong second-factor authentication. All that is required to login is to enter your username and password, then touch the button or gold-colored edge on your YubiKey.
